Fat Tuesday
Fat Tuesday is the last Hoo-hah before Lent. It has grown in popularity in recent years giving French-Catholic communities an excuse to over indulge and practice gluttony.
The festivities begin with the Epiphany on the Twelfth day of Christmas when the three kings visited Jesus bearing gifts on Jan 6.
Mardi Gras is the most well-known community celebration in the U. S which is centered in the French Quarter in New Orleans.
Mardi Gras means “Fat Tuesday “in French. It is from the tradition of slaughtering and devouring a fatted calf on the last day of the celebration. This day is also known as Shrove Tuesday to Shrine or hear confessions. The custom is to eat pancakes, lots of butter and eggs before the fasting and abstinence of Lent officially begins on Ash Wednesday.
Me and my family celebrated Fat Tuesday one year eating pancakes, bacon, and eggs. It sounds pretty good to me!
This year I plan on giving up my favorite treats and pop for Lent. I love my diet coke and, Fresca, so this will be a sacrifice for me. Now if I can convince my sons to do the same!
Sorry Mark- Meatloaf
