Rosie Puts Her Foot In Her Mouth Again
Yesterday on the Today show Rosie said the goverment gave Syphilis for forty years to black people in history. What she said was historically incorrect.
” Between 1932 and 1972, the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) conducted an experiment on 399 black men in the late stages of syphilis. These men, for the most part illiterate sharecroppers from one of the poorest counties in Alabama, were never told what disease they were suffering from or of its seriousness. These men were informed that they were being treated for “bad blood,” their doctors had no intention of curing them of syphilis at all.”
The goverment prevented Blacks who had Syphilis from recieving treatment for Syphilis when they knew that Penicillin cured it. This was morally wrong, but they did not give the Black men Syphilis. I wish Rosie would get her facts straight before she opened her mouth.
The goverment was completely wrong for doing this in the name of research; however, what Rosie said was totally wrong misrepresenting historical accounts.
There was a movie about this a few years back, but I don’t recall the title .
