Student Turns Gun on Self

Cleveland-Yesterday a fourteen year old student opened fire on his classmates, wounding four people before turning the gun on himself. Asa H. Coon threatened his fellow classmates after being suspended for fighting earlier, but no one took his threats seriously.

On the today show, officals said, that the school had only one security guard and no metal detectors. They did have; however, cameras. It struck me funny when the police said they were looking for clues. Clues to what, the damage was already done.

It amazes me how ignorant school administrators, are when it comes to school safety. Haven’t they learned from past tragedies that they need to come up with the funding for metal detectors, safety locks on doors, etc.

They have to get rid of the “It will never happen here” attitude. This reminds me when I was studying at Seton Hill College in Greensburg, PA. It was right after Columbine. My classmates and myself were discussing with my professor about how lapses the schools where, concerning safety.

I stated to my professor, anyone can walk right into the high school, and no one would give them a second look. A psychopath can walk straight into the school, and adminstrators would not even be aware of it.

I decided to take it upon myself, and do some research would anyone stop me. I was 35 at the time and by all means I did not look young enough to be a high school student.

It was a clear, sunny day two weeks after Columbine; I walked right into the school, and circled the high school halls twice. Then I walked into the office, and asked to speak to the principal.

I introduced myself as a concerned parent, and student studing to be a teacher,; I told the principal I could not believe no one stopped me.

If I– could just walk into the school anyone could, I stated to the principal. He yelled, “get the hell out of my school,” and then he asked what college I was going to. I told him I was a student at Seton Hill College.

Before I knew it, there were police at my house, which I have no idea what they thought I was going to do.

I was just proving a point, I told them, our schools right in our own back yard needed to protect our kids, not only from each other, but from intruders who intended on harming them.

The very next day, I was called into the deans office, and was served papers that would put me,on probation. Because, I mentioned their school. And if I did not keep my QPA , up to a 4.00, I would not be able to get into their education program.
I refused to sign the paper. As you can see, I never finished school there.

Today the high school has camera’s, and a security system at the door, so they can see who enters the school; they have yet to get metal detectors.

About Mom’s Soap Box

Moms Soapbox is a forum for all of the fantastically ridiculous issues that face Moms (and Dads) in today's world of information overload and endless checklists on how to be the perfect parent. My intention is to break some stereotypes about what a Mother should be and share with my readers the experiences I have had in raising my two teenage sons while trying to juggle graduate school, a house full of responsibilities and a desire to go with my gut when it comes to parenting. My hope is to show that you can be comfortable enough with yourself and your family to show the world that it isn't a competition but rather a journey to learn and laugh as much as possible
